Swords are about ideas, decisions, the mind and communication, and are often connected with conflict, matters that require a specialist, travel, movement, enterprise, plans.

Coins (also known as Pentacles) are about resources and valuables, property and possessions, growth, status, manufacture, construction, trade, career.

Wands are about energy, enthusiasm, communications, letters, phone calls, distant travel, enterprise, business concerns, negotiations.

Cups are about feelings, emotion, relationship, love, friendship, companionship, colleagues, fulfillment , celebration, romance.

The court cards are about people: kings, mature man; queens, mature women; knights, young people; and pages, children.

Meditation prior to beginning a reading helps establish a relaxed and receptive approach, as this stills the mind and attunes you to higher awareness.

Preparation and Rituals Before Reading

When you get your tarot deck, shuffle and mix the cards until you feel they're ready to be used. You could sleep with the deck under your pillow to create a special link between you and the cards.

Wrap your cards in silk and keep them in a velvet or satin bag, or a wooden box – either one you've bought especially, or the one the cards came in.

Meditate before a reading, or say a prayer. I usually wash my hands before a reading.

You can burn incense or a candle, and/or decorate the table with flowers, with pictures or with whatever looks good to you.

Take a deep breath and focus on the question and whoever the reading is for.
